What’s it about?
This is a story of first love with all its pleasures and sorrows. It’s also a story of the unshakable bond between two brothers. Finally, it’s a story about how a shy boy turns into a man of great compassion and kindness. It takes place in 1947, in the small fictional town of Mason, Mo.
What was the inspiration?
The idea came from my editor, Kate Medina. Normally, I don’t like to take ideas from other people, but I was curious myself about how Arthur came to be the way he was, and how he fell in love with Nola!

“Arthur straightened his back to stand taller as she walked over to him. She was wearing a red sweater- set and a plaid pleated skirt. The white on her saddle shoes was unscuffed. She did not have a comb stuck in her socks like the tough girls did. He began rehearsing in his head: Nola, we need to get something straight. Here, he would step closer and look right into her eyes. I want to tell you something.“
