The Day I Ate Whatever I Wanted: And Other Small Acts of Liberation

What’s it about?

This is a collection of thirteen stories. They are contemporary and focus on women of all ages, teenage to 80-something, dealing with issues of dieting, body image, aging, love, loss, letting go and creating a new life. Some are funny; one will probably make you cry; many are a mix of humor and pathos. And listen, they’re really fun to read.

What was the inspiration?

I was thinking about how women are always ordering salad when they really want something else, and I said to one of my friends, “One of these days I’m going to write a book called, “The Day I Ate Whatever I #%^*$ Wanted!” And so I did, only we edited the title just a wee bit–took out the expletive, even though I thought it added a lot of character.

This is a true story. Once I met a chef from a really fancy restaurant, a really expensive one, too. I asked her what her favorite food was. You know what she said? “Pork rinds. But the homemade ones, which are greasier.” Which just goes to prove all kinds of points.
